1. Start the game. You will find yourself in Hyrule Field as an adult, the game already loaded.
2. Run towards the entrance to Lost Woods. In place of the sign you will see a large white slab.

Explanation/Speculation:
The only logical explanation for this object is that this is a placeholder. In other words, it goes where objects, people, or places are going to be but aren’t yet because they haven’t been coded in yet, haven’t been designed by the graphics department, or are glitching the game and cannot be implemented at the time. This is mainly because the object does absolutely nothing at all: it does not react to Link, it does not have any collision detection, and the texture, though vaguely reminiscent of the Temple of Time, is very primitive. Not to mention the fact that it’s not used in the game anywhere at all.

1. Start the game. You will find yourself in Hyrule Field as an adult, the game already loaded.
2. Run towards the broken bridge. In place of the sign there you will see a small rock.

Screenshots:

Explanation/Speculation: Though this rock is much like the one listed above, it bears a closer resemblance to a baby Goron curled up that turns pitch black when seen from certain angles. It doesn’t do anything, so it probably served the same purpose as the slab above, except with smaller, more menial objects such as signs, rock circles, boulders, grotto holes, and so on.

Explanation/Speculation: A second version of the Vertical Slab, but this time you can stand on it.  Once Link touches it, the box begins to rotate into a standing position, then immediately resets.  This most likely was a test of the collision detection system to ensure that objects moving underneath Link wouldn't cause any glitches.

Explanation/Speculation: I have no idea what this could possibly have been used for.  The sound effect is most likely not the original one that was assigned to the box (hence its annoyingness), but since it has one assigned it may have been meant to test 3-D sound.  And in case you're wondering, the first picture is of Link standing on top of the box (the black marks are Link's shadow).  Yes, that's how tall it is.
